Altamira

Mexico exports 50% of its onion production to U.S.

50% of the onion production grown in Altamira is exported to the United States. Close to 500 jobs are created throughout the harvest for families coming from other states of the Mexican Republic.

The director of Rural Development in the municipality of Altamira (Mexico), Noe Haro Maya, announced that since the production of white, purple and yellow onions was too expensive and for this reason they only rely on a 600 hectare area.

He said that they produced 40 tons of onions per hectare grown and that 50% of these were exported to the United States; the rest was for domestic consumption.
