Canada: Jealous Fruits modifies cherry forecast
They are now projecting a similar start date to last season - approximately July 18 to 19th. Volumes will be limited from July 18 - 24. Once the main harvest begins in very late July full volume availability should last until September 5.
The weather over the entire month of June was very wet, with showery weather more days than not. Luckily, Jealous Fruits' cherries were green throughout this period, and not vulnerable to splitting. This past week, just in time, the weather has improved markedly with daytime highs of 26 to 29 C, and bright sunshine. The forecast for the next ten days is predominantly sunny, with temperatures climbing as high as 31 to 33C. There is no extreme heat forecast for the region.
Jealous Fruits has farms at several locations and elevations throughout the Okanagan Valley. This allows them to extend their growing season. Their valley farm locations are well ahead of their high elevation Cholla Hills Farm. Satins in the valley farms will be harvested approximately July 18, followed by Lapins starting approximately August 1. Sweethearts and Staccatos in the valley farms will be harvested throughout the month of August. In comparison, at the high elevation farm; Rainiers are expected to be harvested August 5, with Sweethearts, Regina and Staccato in late August, and Sovereign and Sentennial to be harvested in early September.
In terms of volume, there are expectations of this year's crop increasing in the range of 15% over last season. In terms of percentage increase by variety, the biggest lifts are anticipated in the Sovereign, Staccato and Sweetheart varieties.
