South Korea: Shadow-Activated QR code boosts sales EMart

Korean store EMart has one-upped the standard QR code by turning it into a 3-D QR code accessible only with the right combination of shadow and sunshine.

This was done to help increase lunchtime sales, a notoriously slow time for EMart. But did it work? Yep! EMart reports that they implemented the QR code program in 13 locations and they’ve now expanded it to 36. Plus, EMart membership grew by 58% in just one month.

Just how did they make their “Sunny Sale” promotion such a great success, you ask? Well, aside from the fact that they differentiated themselves immediately by taking the standard QR to a new level, they also made their promotion exclusive by limiting its accessibility to one hour per day. On top of that, notes Bryan Laurienti, co-owner of BBB Systems, EMart offers a great incentive for shopping during their slowest time per day – a $12 off coupon.

Way to go, EMart!
