The melon and watermelon season in Greece started on May 15th - the mini watermelons are expected to begin harvesting in mid June - and according to Evangelos Sofronas of Greek Stories, a trader of Greek foods based in the Hague, the Netherlands, it's going to be a good harvest this year. He says he expects a total harvest of around 150,000 tonnes, mainly from Crete and the Peloponnese, followed later by Northern and Mainland Greece.
"The warm and sunny weather has benefited the fruits, both in terms of quantity and quality," he said.
Generally the quality and taste of Greek fruit is excellent. It's pure and natural, fruit as the older generations remember it."
However, despite a bountiful harvest there are challenges ahead, the most obvious being the Euro crisis. This has meant that anyone trading in Greek foods has had to seek alternative markets. As Evangelos says, "Due to the crisis the market orientation is mainly fixed on export and on developing new business abroad."
Greek Stories is no exception to this trend and Evangelos points out that the company has become very active in developing international business links. He says, "Now we have customers all over Europe, in countries such as Holland, Germany, Austria, the UK and Scandinavia."
