US: New organic fruit from CF Fresh

CF Fresh, a marketer of fresh organic fruit based in Washington state, will import the Durondeau pear this season. It will be the first time CF Fresh imports the organic variety of the pear to the United States.

The Durondeau pear, also known as De Tongres, originated in Belgium, according to Addie Pobst of CF Fresh.

“It's an heirloom variety,” notes Pobst, “so it's been around since the 19th century, and as far as we're aware, CF Fresh are the first to import the organic variety to the United States.”

The first shipments of fruit, which come from Argentina, will arrive during the first week of March. Initial volumes will be low, with around 15,000 kilograms sold in 10 kilogram boxes the first season.

About the fruit's quality, Pobst says it should be good

“This variety has very good flavor and very good color,” she says.

“The growers in Argentina who supply our fruit have a flair for getting good varieties, and this one is a very good eating pear.”
