"Fresh garlic will enter Chinese market in large volumes in May"

"Export price of Chinese garlic continues to fall"

The Chinese garlic market has experienced a series of significant fluctuations in the last few weeks. The current price continues to decline. The new harvest of fresh garlic will enter the market in large volumes in May.

Carolyn Lee, sales manager at Jinxiang Homage Import and Export Co., Ltd. recently analysed current conditions in the Chinese garlic market: "Recently, we received a large number of orders for garlic. We expect the supply season of garlic from the previous production season to continue until the middle of May because the harvest of fresh garlic will take place in the middle of May. The price of garlic recently fluctuated and is currently quite low. Two weeks ago the price of garlic was still around 8 yuan [1.13 USD] per kg, but has since then fallen to 5 yuan [0.71 USD] per kg. We expect the price to continue this trend but remain between 4-5 yuan [0.57-0.71 USD] per kg. However, the conditions this year are drastically different from previous years, which makes it difficult to predict how the market will develop."

"The garlic price showed a continuous rise in 2019 between Chinese Spring Festival [5 February, 2019] and late April. The garlic price was between 7-8 yuan [0.99-1.13 USD] per kg around this time last year. The price of garlic continued to rise. However, the high garlic price was not beneficial for Chinese garlic export. Many overseas importers were willing to wait a considerable amount of time until the price dropped before they considered ordering garlic from China. In other words, the current low price is much better for garlic export.

"Chinese garlic is much more competitive at the moment. Our export volume increased by 30%-40% in comparison with last year. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic also stimulates our sales volume. Some product sell better during this pandemic because they have a high nutritional value. Lemons contain vitamin C, which strengthens the immune system. Garlic and fresh ginger are also beneficial for the human immune system."

"We established our company in 2009 and now we export our products to more than 40 countries. We mainly export fruits and vegetables. In addition to garlic and ginger, we also export carrots and Chinese cabbages, as well as apples, pears, and lemons. We hope to further expand the variety of our products in the near future. At the moment, we mostly export our garlic products to countries in the Middle East and Africa, such as Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, and Togo. Our products can easily endure the 40-60 days of shipping to Africa. Garlic in particular is well-suited to long-distance transport. We mainly sell our ginger in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The most distant export market for our ginger products is Turkey. When we ship our ginger much further, we are no longer able to guarantee the highest product quality. We do hope to establish business relations with even more overseas partners in the near future."
