"The overall apple production volume decreased by around 30% this year as a result of a springtime cold spell in April. Furthermore, the extreme weather also affected product quality, which was disappointing in comparison with last year. The overall volume of top-quality apples was much smaller than in previous years. This turned the apples that did make to the market into best-selling products." "The decrease in production volume caused a direct increase in the price of apples. The average retail price of apples is 1.5-2 yuan [0.22-0.29 USD] higher per 0.5 kg than it was in the same period last year. As far as we can tell, the reaction to this high price has been very different in China than it has been abroad."

"The high price seems to have little influence on apple sales in the domestic market. Consumers are not at all deterred by the price increase. This is particularly true for top-quality apples. Many markets in south China, in particular in coastal cities, have entered a situation where demand exceeds supply. This situation began at the start of this production season and still continues."
"In overseas markets, however, the attitude of buyers is exactly the opposite. Many overseas importers look at high export prices of Chinese apples and decide to wait and see how the price will develop. In the meantime, they turn their attention to other apple producing countries. This in turn lowers the overall export volume of Chinese apples. We estimate that the overall export volume of Chinese apples from Shaanxi province this year will only be 65% of the overall export volume of last year."
