“In Europe, the Sweet Sensation pears were carefully picked last week, and they’ll be widely available again as of this week. Thanks to the good summer, flavour and quality of the pears is excellent. The licence holders are preparing for a good European season,” according to Ton van Wiggen, senior top fruit salesman for The Greenery.
In 2017, growers still had to deal with a difficult flowering period, so that volume growth wasn’t as good as the growing demand. This year, the European production increases from 6.5 to 10 million kilos thanks to the good flowering period and warm summer. “Once again there’s a lot of interest from various customers, and we therefore expect a good sales season. The pear is of good eating quality due to the warm weather last summer,” says Ton. Within the Global Fruit Platform, a European sales schedule has been drawn up by licence holders. Gerard van Loon, manager of LVE and chairman of GFP: “Plenty of volume is available, so customers can be expected to be supplied with pears until late March 2019. Besides, Sweet Sensation is grown in more and more countries on the Southern Hemisphere, so that we can extend the sales season until mid-May.”
European marketing campaigns
To support the sales of the pears, a large number of marketing campaigns, including shop demonstrations, on-pack promotions, various advertisements and an online campaign, are started in various European countries.
Packaging
The Sweet Sensation pear is available in a one-layer packaging in a recognisable Sweet Sensation box with a PLU sticker, or per four in an appealing consumer packaging.
