The arrival in bulk of sweet limes from various parts of Andhra Pradesh in the last couple of weeks has led to price drops in the Salem markets. Sweet lime is the favourite crop of farmers in Rajamundiri, Cuddappa and Nellore in Andhra Pradesh. Salem and the other western districts get good supplies of these fruits from these areas.
However, local markets in the district are witnessing large numbers if these fruits arriving from Andhra Pradesh in the last few weeks, thanks to the good crop season this year.
Several wholesale fruit dealers in Salem market said that the market usually received about 30 tons of sweet limes per day from Andhra Pradesh. Since last week, this has increased to 50 tons per day, leading to an oversupply. Many temporary stalls have sprung up along the highways and roads in the city and its suburbs.
The Hindu reports, that as harvesting in the orchards in Andhra Pradesh is in full swing, even more limes are expected.
