Great enthusiasm for potato handbook at Potato Europe trade fair

Comprehensible encyclopaedia for the plant of the future

A comprehensible encyclopedia containing all facts and points of interest around the potato. This is the best description of the brand new potato handbook published by the editors of the Aardappelwereld magazine. After the official presentation at the last potato demo day in Westmaas (the Netherlands), the potato encyclopaedia was also presented at the international trade fair Potato Europe at Gut Bockerode. Interest in it is also overwhelming outside the Netherlands, says editor and editor-in-chief Jaap Delleman.

From breeding to the consumers' plate
The extensive reference book was created by Anton J. Haverkort, aka the "Potato Professor". This longtime expert worked as an editor for many years for Dutch magazine Aardappelwereld and is seen as an authority in the international industry. When the potato expert retired about two years ago, he came up with the idea of creating a handbook, Delleman said. "We wanted to combine all the knowledge that Prof. Haverkort has gathered over the years into a comprehensive book, and we have often used scientific sources to confirm the content."

Nevertheless, the manual is intended primarily for the entire chain from breeder to marketer and consumer. The scientific findings of the book therefore focus on the daily practice in potato cultivation and are presented above all through a fluent, understandable writing style. In addition, all stages of the value chain are covered: from the characteristics of the crop to the outstanding place the potato still occupies in our society.

International development of the industry
In addition, the potato industry is steadily developing on an international level. There is a reason that the subtitle of the handbook states: The plant of the future. In regions such as China and Central Asia, the potato sector is growing rapidly. Delleman: "The potato is a stable plant and guarantees a high quality diet as well, so this guide is also interesting for the international sector and we are currently considering publishing it in several other languages."
