Bart Nemegheer, the Aardappelhoeve
Belgium: "In February/March a change in the potato market"

The potato market has been difficult since the beginning of the season. The volume is bigger than last year and the demand remains the same. As a result the prices are low. Nevertheless I expect a change in February" Bart Nemegheer of the Aardappelhoeve, Belgium says.

According to him the supply of good potatoes will be small. "More and more parcels have storage problems and I expect the demand for quality potatoes to increase round about March." At the moment it is difficult to store potatoes and that leaves its mark on the processing market. Once these potatoes are off the market it will become quieter. We hope it will then be better, because nobody will be happy with these prices."

Bart answers 'no' to the question whether there is a large difference in price between the conventional and the organic market. "The organic market is linked to the conventional and this one also is quite a bit lower in price than last year. "Last year the price was 500 euro/ton and now approximately half. The price of conventional potatoes is about 25 euro/ton. Normally after a good year a bad one follows. Because growers after a good year increase the area and as a result a larger volume on the market."
