Philippines: DAF-ARMM awards 61 shredder machines to Maguindanao farmers

The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries - Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (DAF-ARMM) distributed Tuesday the 2nd tranche of shredder machines to farmers in Maguindanao.

Sixty-one shredder machines amounting to a total of more than P21 million, with each worth P350,000, were handed over to the different farmer-cooperatives from across the province. This is in addition to the 44 machines that have already been distributed by DAF-ARMM late last year, according to Maguindanao's agricultural officer, Daud Lagasi.

Lagasi said the farmer-cooperatives complied first with certain requirements before qualifying to receive the machine.

He said DAF-ARMM is planning to provide at least one shredder machine to selected barangays in the future in order to encourage the establishment of community-based composting facilities.

"The awarding of shredder machines to farmers is a nationwide project of the Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) of the DA in support to Executive Order 481 otherwise known as the "Promotion and Development of Organic Agriculture in the Philippines," said Salik Panalunsong, field operations director of DAF-ARMM.

He said it is intended to help promote organic agriculture among the farmers.

The shredder machine is used in making organic fertilizer out of farm wastes. Organic by-products in farming including grasses are placed in composting facility after being shredded using the machine.

"We expect that this will increase the income and productivity of farmers by helping them cutback on chemical fertilizers," Panalunsong said.

"The process also helps reduce wastes," he added.

Maguindanao is the lead producer of rice and corn in the entire ARMM and among the country's leading agricultural province.
