Genoa bridge collapse: logistic repercussions

In addition to the grief caused by the loss of human lives, the collapse of the "Morandi" bridge in Genoa has also led to transport and logistical problems. This is because the Liguria region has multiple ports, therefore the entire north-west of Italy is affected, as illustrated in the map below.

Genoa and Savona are important ports

"I don't think the collapse of the bridge will affect the trade of fresh produce, but it will certainly prolong transport times and increase costs. Liguria is a mountain region overlooking the sea and has always lacked in infrastructure," explains Massimo Savini from RLA.

According to Savini, transit times for those having to collect or ship fruit will be longer. Flows must be rearranged: if one stretch used to take so may hours, they will now increase, so drivers will probably exceed their hourly limit.

"Once again, our country looked bad on an international level. The collapse of the bridge is just the tip of the iceberg of a system characterised by the lack of infrastructure. Italy has many mountain chains, so logistics is difficult and lots of investments are needed to develop new infrastructures and maintain the existing ones. Without modern logistics, the Italian economic system cannot keep up with the other countries."
