Successful start to the season
In contrast to a large part of Europe, Styria had some nice weather this year. A rainy spring and summer were the perfect basis for the optimal development of the apples. Since about 95% of the production is under hail nets, the severe storms in Styria hardly caused any damage.
"The excellent climatic conditions in Styria had an absolutely perfect influence on the development and the inner quality of the apples. The current temperatures also allow a very good colour. The fruit sizes are primarily large (75+) and these are therefore very good. The international starting prices are currently a good 10 percent below last year's level at the beginning of the season,'' says Roland Rosenzopf -Managing Director of EVA- the current situation in Styria.
Premium quality from Styria
EVA expects a significant increase in their main varieties Gala, Golden Delicious, Braeburn and Evelina. The first galas are currently being harvested. The full range of products will be available by November 2018 at the latest. Furthermore, the trading company is very optimistic that the high demand for premium apples in the medium term will form the basis for a balanced marketing season. Styria has had the great good fortune to harvest and store the best qualities this year.
In the long term, the company also believes in the successful future of regional (club) varieties and overseas markets. ''In the quantitative area, we expect the gala apples to see big increases. In addition, we are continuously working to better position ourselves on the market with qualitative niche products.''
