Marco Bergman of Harvest House: “Retail programmes fine, day trading difficult”

“Considerable price differences between small and large bell peppers”

The bell pepper market was very difficult in recent weeks. Because of the extremely warm weather, it wasn’t easy for the bell pepper production regarding quality. “A lot of bell peppers have low fruit weights. That means it becomes more of a puzzle to make 500 gramme-mixed packaging,” says Marco Bergman of Harvest House. “This doesn’t appear to be improving in the next few weeks, resulting in a challenge to deliver mixed bell peppers within specifications. Because of these lower weights, people want to or have to pay more than usual for larger bell peppers, due to the availability of larger bell pepper in general. We’re seeing considerable price differences between small bell pepper compared to the larger ones.”

“Demand has also been very mediocre during the summer period. Besides regular retail programmes, traditional day trading was disappointing. That might be quite normal in summer, but sometimes there’s a recovery from the US or Eastern Europe. This wasn’t the case in recent weeks. We expect that the ending of outdoor productions in countries such as Poland and Hungary will result in some more demand from Eastern Europe. Hopefully we’ll be able to meet any demand from the US as well,” Marco concludes.
