Mexico: Michoacan produces 78% of the national strawberry crop

Michoacan, which is recognized for its great variety of crops that have allowed it to position itself as a national and international leader, has been a leading producer of strawberries for several years. In 2018, the state produced 484,936 tons in the more than 10,119 hectares it has devoted to this crop.

This was stated by Ruben Medina Niño, the head of the Secretariat of Rural Development and Agricultural Food (Sedrua), based on official data that is registered in the Agri-Food and Fisheries Information System (SIAP).

Medina Niño said that berry cultivation was very important for the government of Silvano Aureoles Conejo, which is why they support and encourage protected agriculture through the Sedrua in coordination with the Sagarpa, by giving producers infrastructure and equipment, such as macro-tunnels, greenhouses, technified irrigation, and support for their crops’ health and safety.

The latter, he said, is of vital importance as it allows producers to export their agricultural products to the different countries of the world and it’s achieved through different phytosanitary campaigns.

The state official said that Michoacan’s strawberry production was followed by the production of Baja California with 91,000 tons per year.

He also stated that 32 municipalities in Michoacan grew strawberries. The main producing municipalities are Zamora, with 174,952 tons and more than 3,071 hectares; Tangancicuaro with more than 83,383 tons and 1,480 hectares, and Jacona with more than 71,500 tons and 1,248 hectares, just to mention a few.

He also said that Michoacan’s production contributed more than 9,597 million pesos to the country.

Medina Niño took the opportunity to congratulate and applaud the strawberry and berry producers in general, as their constant and permanent effort has managed to position Michoacan as the country’s leading producer of fruits and as the entity’s strongest and most robust pillar.
