According to Ruben Medina Niño, the head of the Secretariat of Rural Development and Agrifood (Sedrua) in Michoacan, Michoacan consolidated its position as the leading producer of limes in Mexico with a production superior to 711,181 tons of lime.
This volume, he said, has allowed the state to decisively regain the leadership of the country's citrus production.
He also stated that the main producing municipalities in the entity were Tepalcatepec, Buenavista, Apatzingan, Coalcoman, and Aguililla, just to name a few.
According to information from the Agricultural Food and Fisheries Information System (SIAP), Michoacan was the leading producer of limes, followed by Veracruz with 658 thousand tons of limes.
Medina Niño stressed that the state produced 62% of the Mexican lime, that is, more than 695 thousand tons, and a lower quantity of the Persian variety. Meanwhile the state of Veracruz produces 53.1 of the Persian lime and Tamaulipas 70.9 of the Italian lime.
Medina Niño also said that Mexico accounted for 14 percent of the world's lime production, with 2,513,000 tons, and that it was the second biggest producer of this citrus fruit in the world, after China, which accounts for 17 percent of the world's lime production.
He also stated that the United States was their main importer, as in 2017 it purchased more than 655 thousand tons of this fruit from Mexico. Mexico exports its limes to 28 countries.
Citriculture is considered one of the main activities of the primary sector, and limes are one of the country's most important citrus fruits, not only because of their use in Mexico's cuisine, but also because of its production volume.
Saudi Arabia is a potential buyer, as it imports around 121 thousand tons of this fruit per year.
