Season of German plums and prunes is in full swing

From July to October, plums are harvested at all local growing areas, arriving fresh in the German supermarkets. And this, to the delight of the consumers. Because 41 percent of Germans consider the plum to be their favourite fruit. Accordingly, more than 500 grams of plums and plums per capita are consumed in the average private household.

Unlike plum year 2016, with a harvest of almost 38,000 tonnes, 2017 was a bad year for fans and producers of the blue stone fruit. Because of tough spring frosts, heavy rain and hail, only 23,885 tonnes were harvested in Germany in 2017 - 14,000 tonnes less than in the previous year. This year, however, prospects are good again for the Herrmann, Katinka, President, Cacaks Schöne, St.Hubertus or Auerbacher, Buhler Zwetschge, Ortenauer, Presenta and the Hauszwetsche - as the most well-known native varieties are called.

Due to the persistent heat, the season of domestic fruits has started even earlier this time and it is currently gaining momentum. The main growing areas of the beautiful Blues are traditionally Baden-Württemberg, followed by Rhineland-Palatinate, Bavaria and Brandenburg, where this time an above-average harvest (up 25% in the south and 21% in the east) is expected.
