Port of Trieste starts to focus on fresh produce sector

The Port Authority of the eastern Adriatic Sea in Italy and the FVG Agrifood Park will work together to develop and promote the best strategies in support of the development of the fresh produce sector in ports and in the field of logistics.

“Trieste is an important junction that connects to regional infrastructure and the port wants to continue to excel at this. We’ve decided to start a cooperation with the FVG Agrifood cluster San Daniele, also keeping in mind the construction of a new port area focused on the food sector,” says Zeno D’Agostino, manager of the Port Authority.

Recently, the Port of Trieste took over a number of facilities in nearby Bagnoli della Rosandra, where some specially equipped rooms will be created as cold stores for fruit and vegetables.

It’s the first stage of 2,000 square metres of cold store on a total of 76,000 square metres of storage and 150,000 square metres of infrastructure, including a railway junction.

Considering the possibilities for growth offered by the new port infrastructure for companies in the food sector and the regional bio-economy, the Agrifood Cluster Development Agency will support the Port Authority by offering their expertise and know-how.

However, the cooperation will go beyond the agro-food sector, including the construction of a terminal for organic methane.
