Apeel Avocados available at Costco and Harps Food Stores

Today, Apeel Sciences announced that Del Rey Avocado Company is supplying Apeel avocados to Costco Wholesale (COST) stores in the U.S Midwest. Additionally, Apeel avocados supplied by Eco Farms are now available at Harps Food Stores, an Associated Wholesale Grocers chain of supermarkets in the Midwest. Soon, they will be available at more retail locations across the US.

Consumer education
Apeel avocados will be co-branded with the Apeel label or sticker. “Consumers can simply look for Apeel on the label to know they are getting a higher quality avocado with more time to enjoy as they last twice as long,” says James Rogers, CEO and Founder of Apeel. “We want consumers to know where they can get Apeel avocados, so we're prominently co-branding the bags with Eco Farms and Del Rey and there will be in-store signage as well. We're also creating a new website that will educate about Apeel - how it works, how it's made, and where to find Apeel produce.”

Sourced in Peru
“Del Rey Avocado is excited to provide the first Apeel Avocados to Costco. Del Rey Avocado takes pride in ensuring that the highest quality avocados make it to the consumer each and every time,” said Jessica Hunter, Vice President of Production for Del Rey Avocado Company. The avocados are sourced from Peru and will be available year-round.

Food waste
The U.S. retail food sector generates eight million tons of waste annually in distribution centers and stores, or $18 billion a year in lost value for retailers. Apeel is the first plant-derived solution for extending produce shelf life, which dramatically reduces food waste at the supplier, retailer, and consumer levels. Additionally, since avocados with Apeel maintain quality and optimal ripeness twice as long, without requiring the use of refrigeration or preservatives, it’s now possible to bring better quality avocados to supermarkets across the U.S.

“We’re excited to be working with exceptional partners as they share our vision of a food system that provides better quality food for all and less waste. With our partners, we believe we can increase the availability and accessibility of high quality, nutritious produce while simultaneously preserving our natural resources and environment,” said Rogers.
