Spain: Experts warn about the limits of the current production model

Experts in bioeconomy have warned of the limits of the current production model and the need for a sustainable use of biological resources, in a meeting organized by Cajamar and the Association of Science and Technology Parks of Spain (Apte), which was attended by 150 professionals

Cajamar and Apte organized the II International Congress of Bioeconomy in Barcelona, in collaboration with Barcelona's Science Park and LLeida's Science and Agricultural Food Tecnology Park. According to a statement from both companies, the event was attended by researchers, technicians and entrepreneurs.

The goal of the conference was to promote bio-economy and the development of more efficient innovative projects that favor a new economic model without dependence on fossil fuels, promoting the use of biological resources, which accounts for 6.5% of GDP and 9% of the active population.

The president of Cajamar, Eduardo Baamonde, stated that the innovations also seek to reduce, for example, the waste of food in industrial processes.

"We wanted to connect the study's objective, the recent evolution and future possibilities of the global bio-economy with the concept of sustainability," Baamonde added.

The president of Apte, Felipe Romera, underlined the role of science and technology parks as "engines of the technologies of the future and promoters of emerging sectors, such as bio-economy, which help the economic and social development of the country."

Romera stated that the 51 operating parks increased the number of companies they had to 8,000. These companies billed 27,000 million euro and employed 170,000 people.
