BLE Marktbericht KW23/18

Germany: Supply of Italian apricots has almost doubled

Spanish apricots are still plentiful. Supply from Italy almost doubled. The smaller supplies from France also grew. Alongside Mogador, Turkey presented Sekerpare as well. In addition, Greek lots appeared in Munich and Berlin. The divergent products brought some movement in price ranges. On the one hand, they dipped somewhat due to both larger volumes as well surpluses due to lesser quality. On the other hand, they rose for lots with excellent organoleptic properties. This was true, for example, of the coloured and flavourful Sekerpare from Turkey. For the bulk of the produce, however, marketers had drop their prices despite a dynamic demand.

Apples
Supplies from overseas usually fit well into the market. Their prices hardly changed. Although these oscillated at a fairly high level, this did not really restrict demand.

Pears
Interest remaind rather small. Supply was more than enough to cover the demand. As a result, distributors did not need to change their prices.

Table grapes
Demand was only satisfactory at times. However, it grew frequently when prices dropped after more abundant shipments from the Mediterranean arrived.

Strawberries
Although sales obviously accelerated thanks to the warm weather, it was seldom possible to clear all the stores. Prices saw wide margins, eventually dropping off quite a bit.

Apricots
The differences in products brought some movement in the prices. On the one hand, they dipped somewhat, due to both larger volumes and surpluses due to lesser quality. On the other hand, they rose for lots with excellent organoleptic properties.

Cherries
The summery weather formed the basis for lively sales. Growing availability led to an intensified competition. The whole thing resulted in dropping prices with diverging margins.

Peaches and nectarines
Demand switched between low to satisfactory. As a result of increased supply, prices tended to fall. Even the more manageable stocks in Italy did not escape this negative trend.

Kiwis
The batches from the southern hemisphere were able to attract enough customers through their excellent quality, the produce from Italy throught their low prices. Sales therefore were relatively quick.

Lemons
The limited supply of the Spanish Verna did not adequately satisfy demand. The prices therefore remained at a respectable level. Sometimes they even moved up.

Bananas
Sales were rater quiet. Demand was small, because of the pronounced competition from summer fruits. As a result, prices tended to drop.

Cauliflower
The ongoing sunny weather slowed sales and accelerated the local harvest. The shrinking demand inevitably led to lower prices.

Lettuce
The influx of domestic iceberg lettuce intensified. The summer weather accelerated demand, so that sometimes sales were almost complete. The prices usually remained stable.

Cucumbers
There was a constant demand. Prices in part were fairly constant. As a rule, however, they dropped slowly due to an increase in supply.

Tomatoes
An apparent oversupply kept making it difficult to sell all produce up. As a result of the summer temperatures, their popularity grew very quickly, but not fast enough to avoid surpluses.

Sweet peppers
The week-long high prices levels of the red and yellow varieties finally broke in Hamburg. In Cologne and Munich, the red cultivars became more expensive because their availability was insufficient to cover demand.

Asparagus
On the one hand, there were too many large batches on the market. Prices came noticeably under pressure. On the other hand, demand was sufficient to create price increases that sometimes even exceeded 40%.

Onions
The supply and demand of these goods harmonized almost completely. In many cases, prices remained fairly stable for the European lots, while those from overseas declined slightly.
