Jan van der Lans, van der Lans International:

"Chilean season ending, New Zealand onions selling well"

Onions from New Zealand and Tasmania are currently selling very well. "Supermarket programmes in Europe have started. There is a higher demand for specific sizes such as 60/70 and 70/80. These are, however, not available in large volumes", says Jan van der Lans of the Dutch company, Van der Lans International. "The Chilean onion season is over, and prices were good. Now, there are new Spanish onions. This fits in nicely with the demand."

"We have also received our first Egyptian red onions. We sort and package these ourselves in the Netherlands. In this way, we can guarantee their quality and sizes. Exports from Egypt are often particularly chaotic. Volumes are often loaded and sent to various markets, without having been checked. There is still a sufficient supply of Dutch onions. It is, however, becoming increasingly difficult to find good-quality batches", concludes Jan.
