AU: Good growing conditions lead to high cucumber yields in South Australia

Growing conditions for cucumbers have been very good throughout the 2017-18 season, with above average yields across the board being experienced by a South Australian based vegetable producer.

4 Ways Fresh Produce says the produce in general has been of very good quality, although the cucumber season switching from South Australia to Western Australia over Winter.

"This time of the year the supply of fruit slows down from our growers in the Virginia area due to the cold weather but we then source most of the fruit from our Geraldton farm," General Manager Kingsley Songer said. "We will bring some 2.5 million cucumbers over from WA during the season which runs from June through to early December."

The company handles three varieties of Cucumber; Continental, Lebanese and Green, and Mr Songer says demand for all cucumbers heading into winter has been good with supermarkets taking good volumes of Lebanese and Continental cucumbers.

"Continental Cucumber is our main line with over six million pieces of fruit passing through our packing shed every year," he said. "Our peak season is Spring through Summer although Continental cucumber is still our main line during the Winter months. All of our cucumber crop goes into the domestic market via either our market shop at the Adelaide Produce Market or it is sold directly to the large supermarket chains."

4 Ways Fresh has three farms in the Virginia area totalling about 30 hectares with a packing shed being situated on one of these farms. It grows Continental cucumbers under semi-hydroponics on one of its Virginia properties during Spring and Summer.

"We also have a 55 hectare property at Geraldton in WA where we grow Continental Cucumbers during the SA winter months," Mr Songer said. "At this stage all the produce grown in WA is freighted back to Virginia for processing and distributing to our customers. Our main lines, other than Continental and Lebanese cucumber are Capsicum, Zucchini, Tomato and Eggplant. Growing conditions in both Virginia and Geraldton are near perfect during the growing seasons for each region."
