Colombia: Mangoes rot in Magdalena due to overproduction

Mango producers in Cienaga and Zona Bananera, two municipalities in the department of Magdalena, are alarmed because their crops are rotting. There is an overproduction of fruit that nobody will buy and that is literally lying on the farm roads, where flies and other pests abound.

According to the local media caracol.com.co the region is on the verge of a social crisis and an environmental and health emergency due to the enormous quantity of mangoes that are decomposing in it. In addition, the farms are laying off workers because they have no way to pay their wages.

The problem, according to farmers, is that the government generated incentives to plant, but didn't give them any alternatives to commercialize the fruit for processing, so that they wouldn't lose out.
