Large supply puts strawberry prices under pressure

At the beginning of May, the first small quantities of strawberries from early cultivation, priced at €4.52 per kg, were launched onto the market. Despite a lack of rain, the ripeness and quality of the strawberries turned out to be good, due to generally favorable weather conditions. In the middle of the month, more than enough goods were available, so prices dropped to €3 per kg.

Due to the cooler weather of early May, on the one hand, demand was somewhat dampened and, on the other hand, maturity was delayed, causing the flow of goods to slow down and putting some pressure on the market. Before Pentecost, the market received enough produce and it was well supplied after the holidays. This contrasted with the past few years, when there was often a situation of oversupply. After Pentecost prices therefore were still at €2.40 per kg. At the end of May, the market came under pressure from product inflow from northern Germany, causing prices to fall to €2.00 per kg.
