The Torbali Valley, located near the western Turkish city of Izmir, is well-known for its fruit and vegetable production and its newest product is bananas, the harvest of which still continues. The construction of the 2nd banana greenhouse was recently completed. Banana is only grown in three other cities in Mediterranean region, thus Torbali is the only area in Aegean region where bananas are currently grown.
The second greenhouse was constructed in an area of 230,000 square feet and has the same features as the first one. It has cost around 300,000 USD and the first harvest in this new greenhouse is expected to take place in November. The planting of banana trees has already started and each tree will be able to be harvested for 3 years.
These greenhouses in Torbali are the most modern banana greenhouses in Turkey and both greenhouses are equipped with automation systems for fertilization, irrigation and ventilation. A total of 4,500 banana trees will be planted in the second greenhouse.
The harvested bananas from the first greenhouse are already sold to the local retailers and, with the second greenhouse, the products will be distributed all over Turkey.
