Colombia: Quindio will export its first avocados to the US

Colombia started exporting Hass avocados to the United States last year. The department of Quindio will ship its first shipment of Hass avocado to the US on Wednesday, May 30. The shipment, which consists of 20 tons of avocados, is being made by the Pacific Fruits company. The cargo left the municipality of Salento on Friday, May 25, to the port of Cartagena.

In November, the country exported its first 34 tons of Hass, which was produced in the department of Caldas, to the US. In 2017, Colombian avocado exports to the US amounted to $70,571 dollars, while its exports world wide amounted to US $52.9 million.

Rodolfo Ahumada, the Commercial Director of Pacific Fruits, indicated that the " US is the main consumer of Hass avocado in the world, with a very dynamic consumption behavior throughout the year." "Our fruit's presentation, quality, and flavor meets the expectations of this market so it has all the possibilities to position itself in that country," he added.

As a result of being able to export to the US, in the first quarter of this year Colombian Hass avocado exports to the world amounted to US $22.8 million, i.e. 130% more than in the same period of 2017.

Ahumada assured us that the company expected to ship 35 to 40 containers of avocado to the US this year. He also highlighted the technical support it had received from the Ministries of Commerce, Industry and Tourism and Agriculture, and different unions, such as Asohofrucol.
