Italy: Green bean campaign in full swing

Campania is a traditional green bean producer region, especially around the Vesuvius and in Caserta. Organizzazione di produttori Agriverde is located in Francolise and owns both protected crops and open fields. The early productions grown in greenhouses are currently being harvested.

"Volumes in protected fields reach 150 tons between April and July. The early produce market is rather stable from one year to the next and early green beans are rather profitable, with prices ranging from €1.50 to €2.50/kg," explains Silvestro Gallipoli, manager of the Agriverde technical office.

It takes a lot of labour to grow green beans, as "harvesting alone is €0.70-0.80/kg. This means that, when prices drop below €1, it's no longer profitable to harvest."
