Paraguay: Mangoes all year round thanks to a social initiative

A new project will ensure that there is the possibility of obtaining mangoes all year, even though they can't be produced in May because of low temperatures. In summer, there's so much production that much of it is lost in the streets.

This social initiative aims to industrialize the fruit and produce different products with it, such as mango chutney. The proposal would benefit people with limited resources. Camilo Guanes, the director of Calles de Asunción project, said that the goal of the pilot project was to make the raw material sustainable over time, through a business model.

It all started when they realized that 50% of the 2,500 tons collected were lost. This was an opportunity to make this situation profitable.

Rodolfo Angensheidt, better known as "Chapori", is in charge of preparing the recipe, together with the Torrens family. The dynamics would consist in the collection of the mango by the urban sanitation management of the municipality. Then they would be taken to the Delicatessen factory, which would produce a limited quantity of 5,000 units that would be sold to Casa Rica.

Guanes said that they would have chutney all year round thanks to a model that will train the people involved. “We'll use 5 tons of mango to make the 5.000 units. The fruit will be frozen and we'll manage it according to the demand," he added. The training will take place at the O'Hara Gastronomy School.

He also said this initiative was being led by advertising agencies such as Oniria, Branding Brandon, and Viento Sur, as well as with the support of the Municipality and gastronomy companies.

The Calles de Asunción project can be found in social networks, such as Facebook. There is even a way of communicating with the people responsible of the project so that they collect the mango being wasted. "All this has been a joint effort from the people from Aseo Urbano to channel the collection. The idea came up some time before the work began."
