Hamburg wholesaler delivers quality Spanish fruits in Germany and abroad

‘Monna Lisa apricots about one euro above the normal price’

The summer's fruit season is currently picking up speed. On the Hamburg wholesale market stone fruits and (water) melons are being marketed in large quantities as well. But buyers in the fruit and vegetable sector are also paying close attention to brands and quality labels in this era. It is no coincidence that trading in so-called quality fruits under a recognizable brand is particularly lucrative, according to Mehmet Karaagac - owner of Ferdinand Gellersen GmbH and distribution partner of the quality brand Monna Lisa.

Price differences
Nowadays, apart from the usual regional products such as asparagus and strawberries, stone fruits are an interesting business for wholesalers as well. Under the quality brand Monna Lisa, every week a variety of peaches, nectarines and particularly apricots are marketed. The label makes for a significant difference in pricing, Karaagac says, while showing a palette of both Monna Lisa fruits and regular Turkish apricots. "The Turkish apricots of the normal sort we currently sell for about 3 euros per kilo. The Monna Lisa on the other hand, is priced significantly higher: about 4 euros per kilo.”

Spanish watermelons are also traded under the label Monna Losa

Valencian watermelons are also marketed in large quantities today. In this area too, the Monna Lisa brand is particularly successful and the label stands for irresistible freshness. But not even the quality of the brand can cover fact that the season is expiring. Citrus from the Spanish region of Valencia is nearing its end, says the owner. "This week the last lots of this season will arrive and then it's over for the Monna Lisa tangerines.”

Important sales markets
The Ferdinand Gellersen company has been based on the wholesale market for over 90 years. Six years ago, the trading company was taken over and since then the product range has been expanded gradually, mainly with dried fruits, figs and apricots. The main customers of the GmbH are delicatessen and weekly market traders as well as larger consumers such as hotels and restaurants. Outside of the Hamburg metropolitan area, the management also focuses on sales markets in the Kiel/Flensburg region as well as beyond the border, in Denmark.
