Production expected to drop by 3-5%
Spain: Start of new garlic harvest campaign
On 16 May, the National Association of Garlic Producers and Marketers (ANPCA) held its 2018 Ordinary and Extraordinary General Assemblies in Montilla, Cordoba. The 57 leading companies of the Spanish garlic sector gathered to analyse the development of the latest campaign, as well as the forecasts ahead of the start of the current 2018 harvest campaign.
Regarding the 2017 campaign, the ANPCA presented the sector's global figures, which confirmed the record production volume achieved last season, which exceeded 267,000 tonnes. Sales were somewhat slower than in the previous campaign and significantly lower prices were paid compared to the two previous campaigns, when record levels had been reached.
The ANPCA reported that the harvest had already started in some fields, confirming the expected 15 day delay compared to last year; a consequence of the rainy weather in March and April. The total number of hectares planted remains stable compared to the previous season and amounts to 26,000 hectares, although the total production is expected to fall by 3-5% due to the lack of sunshine in recent months. This is also the reason why calibres are currently smaller.
