Urumqi International Airport was officially appointed as a fruit import airport on January 17, 2017. In May of that same year, the first shipment of "ocean fruit" first entered China through Urumqi International Airport. It consisted of 1542 kg of fresh cherries from Tajikistan. Urumqi International Airport imported a total of 81 tons of fresh fruit last year. The majority of that volume entered the country between May and July. This is the production season of cherries. The main production areas are Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
