China: Henan garlic prices rise

This week, the price of garlic in the Wanbang market showed an upward trend. At this moment, there are three main areas that provide garlic for the Wanbang market: Zhongmu, Yixian, and Shandong production bases. Here are the main reasons why the prices of garlic are rising. Firstly, the decrease in supply. Garlic is a seasonal vegetable, its growth cycle is relatively short. This week, all three main suppliers are already running out of product, which resulted in higher prices.

Secondly, the young garlic sprouts that had been bought by the merchants earlier, have entered the market. The merchants say they've decided to sell their garlic sprouts right now in order to obtain profit as soon as possible because of this week's rise in prices. Compared to the matured garlic, the young garlic sprouts have better quality, they can be sold for the higher price and their arrival on the market is boosting the prices of all kinds of garlic.

However, compared to the same period of last year, this week's prices of garlic are lower. The main reason is that the garlic farmers expanded their garlic planting areas. According to the merchants, the planting area of garlic in Henan increased by about one-third, and the amount of garlic has increased significantly, which caused the general fall in prices.
