Effective traps against Drosophila suzukii

Drosophila suzukii is a 3 millimetre fruit fly from Asia now found in 12 Italian regions. It affects berry, soft fruit and top fruit orchards, attacking the fruit while it's ripening.

It prefers ripe fruit to reproduce, meaning it's impossible to employ the usual pesticides, as the produce is practically ready to be harvested.

Solutions such as Tap Trap and Vaso Trap are the most effective form of control against Drosophila. They enable producers to verify whether the insect has attacked and the entity of the damage. They also make it possible to mass-catch the adults thus preventing their reproduction. No pesticide is needed as it has been proved that traps are more effective than chemical treatments in Italy. This way, pollinator insects are also safeguarded.

Traps are usually red as insects are attracted by this colour. No harmful substances or pheromones are used and they can be easily prepared at home using apple vinegar, red wine and cane sugar.

Vaso Trap is a highly-selective trap made up of a pierced funnel and a lid. It must be placed in orchards when the fruit starts ripening. Tap Trap in instead useful for the mass catching of Drosophila suzukii.

The traps can be left in the orchards until the end of the season to capture even the last specimens. They can be placed at the edge of orchards in case of crops ripening at different stages. They must be checked frequently and the bait must be replaced every two weeks.
