Hugues Devalois, Les Aulx du Sud-Ouest:

“This year we’ll offer French garlic for a longer period”

Les Aulx du Sud-Ouest is specialised in the marketing of French garlic. When the French season ends, the company imports garlic from China, Peru and Argentina. 90% of the garlic is intended for sale on the French market. Hugues Devalois, responsible for the French wholesale market, says: “Our activities allow us to offer a broad product range; not only in terms of origin, but also in terms of appellations, like for example Lautrec Pink Garlic, Label Rouge, Cadours AOP Purple Garlic and many more. The different origins enable us to offer high quality products year-round.”

“Normally the French production covers a marketing period of six months, from August to January. Our goals is to extend this period. Significant new investments have been made to optimise sorting, cleaning and storage processes and this will allow us to offer French garlic for a few more weeks compared to last year.”

Hugues adds that currently, there is a lot of Spanish garlic on the French market. “Amounts from China are much smaller. The French market asks for Spanish and Chinese garlic in order to have a cheaper alternative for French products.”

The harvesting of French garlic is about to begin. “Fresh garlic will be available from week 19. The launch of dry garlic is scheduled for the first of August.” Regarding the different colours, Hugues says: “The French wholesale market has a strong preference for purple, while the mass market prefers white garlic."

Les Aulx du Sud-Ouest is the president of the marketeers of the Cadours Purple garlic (AOP de Cadours). Hugues: “We try to raise consumer awareness for this appellation.”
