Turkish watermelon season about to start

“We are in transit of the Iranian watermelon export to our Turkish supply. The first harvests of the Turkish production have started. These volumes are distributed on the local market. However, this first two weeks of May, we expect higher volumes of good export product, so soon export will start. We export to the European market, such as Croatia and Germany, Netherlands among others”, explains Wilberforce from Gold Finger compnay from Aydin, Turkey.

They also have a sister company in Iran, from which they now export the watermelons directly to their European customers. “The watermelons from Iran are available year-round. When there is no Turkish supply, we use the Iranian offer to keep our supply going. At this moment prices are a bit high, as there is not much volume in the market yet. We expect that, as the season continues, supply will increase in the European market and prices will reduce.”

“The watermelons that we offer from Iran are between 8 and 15 kilo. We expect the Turkish watermelons to weigh about the same, 9-10 kilo up to 15 kilo. This means the sizes are good and the tests for quality have been very positive. In addition, consumers prefer to have less or no seeds in the watermelons. Even though it’s a seeded variety, the numbers of seeds are expected to be low.”
