Indirect export to the Netherlands

Peru: Hass avocados, the path to success for producers in La Libertad

The 18 producers of the Association of Organic Producers of ChimĂș, found in Hass avocado cultivation an alternative that has allowed them to consolidate the offer of this product in the international market and generate a fixed income, which has improved their quality of life.

In 2015, the Compensation Program for Competitiveness (AGROIDEAS) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (MINAGRI), co-financed a business plan with an investment of S /.375,206.30

This group of producers from the tourist district of Huanchaco in Trujillo, chose to convert their hard yellow corn, passion fruit, and pea crops to Hass avocado crops, after receiving advice from AGROIDEAS, which is part of the MINAGRI.

According to Francisco Bocanegra, the president of the association, these temporary crops had a very low level of productivity, unstable prices, and even generated debts that, for the most part, they could not pay. As a result, they decide to associate and bet on a fruit with high export potential.

The first harvest of 2016 yielded one ton of avocados in each of the 25.8 hectares they have. In the second season, April 2018, productivity increased to 4 tons per hectare, significantly improving their capacity. The production yield is expected to progressively increase in the coming years.

Profitable market
AGROIDEAS aims to promote partnership to serve as a means to generate economies of scale in the producers' production systems, improve their articulation to markets, and strengthen their negotiating capacity. A goal that has been achieved, thanks to their business plan based on technology adoption.

At present the Association of Organic Farmers Gran ChimĂș has managed to consolidate its production chain charging S /.7.00 per kg for their avocados, which meets international quality and safety standards. This is just the beginning of a long road of success that this group of 18 producers has begun to trace.

In just three years they have managed to produce the volume necessary to carry out indirect export to the Netherlands through the Camet Trading SAC company.
