Mexico: Bad year for mangoes in Sinaloa

The President of the Baluarte Presidio Committee, Ismael Diaz, said that it would be a very difficult year for mango production in the south of the State.

He said that the best expectation was rescuing 50 percent of the production once the season ends in mid-August.

He also stated that there were already 3 years of accumulated drought in the area, so the crops are stressed and the fruit doesn't reach the maturity need to achieve export quality.

The National Water Commission has already identified Rosario and Escuinapa as chronic drought areas, so the only solution is to implement irrigation systems, he added.

Meanwhile, mango production has been favorable in northern Sinaloa, he said. The north produces 20 to 25 tons of mango per hectare, while the south only produces 7 tons per hectare.

The mango varieties produced in this region are the Tommy Atkins, Kent, Ataulfo, and Keitt varieties.
