Italy: New cherry varieties available

Paolo Laghi from Battistini Vivai has no doubt about it: consumers see cherries as tasty fruits that must be sweet (i.e. with a high Brix level), big (i.e. grade 30+) and with a dark colour. Battistini Vivai will attend Macfrut (hall D, stand 078) to meet clients and introduce the latest products.

Rocket variety

"Over the past few years, we have received a lot of requests from Eastern Europe, so much so that 80% of our scion production is destined abroad. We work mainly with the Ukraine, Hungary and Moldova. Cherry cultivation has grown a lot in these countries, where there are mostly semi-intensive (1000 trees per hectare) and super-intensive (1600 trees per hectare) orchards."

In Italy, Battistini Vivai has recently supplied a producer who set up a 6,000 trees per hectare orchard with a 3x0.50 m layout and trees around 2.50 metres high. Anyway, all those interested in producing cherries must invest in anti-rain nets or at least anti-insect nets.

"We have a lot of varieties available and have recently acquired new licences. All our cherries have high organoleptic qualities and good potential grades."

In addition to Cot International's Rocket, Frisco, Nimba and Red Pacific, we have introduced varieties from Ips' Royal series, including some that need few chill hours (Royal Lynn) as well as new acidic varieties for processing licenced by Artevos such as Lovopetri and Coralin and the sweet Irena variety, which is an excellent Regina pollinator.

Rocket variety

"We often recommend varieties that are tolerant to cracking, although anti-rain nets remain the best solutions. If you invest thousands of Euros in a cherry orchard, you can't risk everything due to the rain."
