Peru: More than 1,000 tons of fresh asparagus certified for export

The fresh asparagus export campaign in the region of La Libertad has had a good start in 2018. The National Service of Agrarian Health (Senasa), of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, stated that 1,652 tons of this product were certified for export during the first quarter of the year.

The product is certified via Senasa's Phytosanitary Certification, guaranteeing that it complies with the phytosanitary regulations of the main destination markets for fresh asparagus, such as Holland, Chile, Brazil, Colombia, Australia, South Korea, Japan, Panama, and the US.

Fresh asparagus is one of the most important agricultural products in La Libertad, which produced 3,884 tons during 2017. This product is considered of economic importance in the region due to the demand for labor and income that it generates.

Agricultural export evaluation
To consolidate the quality and safety of the product, Senasa performs a random sampling of the shipments to be sent, evaluating the presence of regulated pests and other requirements established by the importing countries.

Each importing country has established phytosanitary requirements through a bilateral Work Plan. Compliance with them is mandatory to obtain the Phytosanitary Certificate, an essential document for the export of this and all products of agricultural origin.
