China: Price of Shandong cabbage still 40% higher than in 2017

This spring, the prices of many vegetables have fallen. However, the price of Shandong cabbage is still relatively stable. It is even higher than it was last year. How is that possible? In fact, Shandong cabbage, like most vegetables, is also falling in price, but it is still 40% more expensive than it was in the same period of 2017.

In 2017, many farmers planted Chinese cabbage, so the supply exceeded demand and the price went down. They were afraid that prices would continue to fall this year, so they planted less cabbage and now the market demand is higher. This is why the price has not decreased - yet. However, we can expect that the price of cabbage will become lower, mainly due to the rising temperatures. A lot of new vegetables will enter the market, consumers will have more choice and the price will go down.
