Paul van der Linde:

"Carrot trade over by the end of May"

Carrot sales are running smoothly in the Netherlands at the moment. "There is currently less demand from Eastern Europe. I do, however, expect they will need carrots until the end of June. It can just as easily pick up again", says Paul van der Linde of the carrot and potato trader of the same name from Emmeloord in the Netherlands. "Sales to Southern Europe are going well. There, mostly Belgian traders jump in."

"Carrots prices have been climbing on a weekly basis since February. But last week they remained stable. The prices for washed carrots is between EUR0,30 and EUR0,40 at the moment. The demand for carrots has been bolstered. This is because most of the Southern Europe baby carrots yield was lost due to heavy rain. In the Netherlands, there is still plenty of stock. It is, however, shrinking faster than usual."

"I expect we will be done by about the end of May. This is because of bad quality. Seventy percent of the carrots are of poorer quality", says Paul. "This means we put a lot of work into carrot sales this season. Fortunately, prices were good. It is a completely different situation to last year. The carrots were of excellent quality then. They were easy to sell, but there were no customers. So, prices were low. I much prefer the current situation", concludes Paul.
