Lies den Ouden, Liedo:

"Celeriac sizes are the problem"

This season, the size of celeriac is the problem, says Lies den Ouden of Dutch celeriac wholesaler, Liedo. "If you have a batch of smaller sizes, you can still earn something." As in the case of cabbage, mostly large celeriac was harvested in the past season. "The demand is mainly for tubers of about one kg. Retail prices for packaged small sizes is EUR0,30 per kg. For the larger ones (>1,3 kg), prices are at around EUR0,26.

Examples of packaging options

The price difference between small and large sizes is also not that great. This is because there is not much demand, but still more than enough supply. "Currently, the celeriac is coming from cold storage. We are done with those that were stored in air-cooled barns", says Lies. Celeriac is available year round in the Netherlands. This is because early cultivation season and those sold out of storage follow up on each other. The early celeriac has been planted in recent weeks. "Somewhat later than usual because of the cold weather. I expect the harvest will be a bit later too - around the end of July."

Liedo has its own packing station. It meets the requirements of GlobalGAP and the Hygiene code for unprocessed vegetables. They have been active in the market for more than 40 years. "We are a smaller player on the market. This means we can continue distinguishing ourselves by delivering quality. We keep working at this", states Lies. "There is a lot of competition. Fortunately, we work with fixed suppliers and clients. There is not a lot of demand right now. If it picks up, we will be able to scale up quickly."
