Almost 1,400 tons of mushrooms from Saxony

In Saxony, mushrooms were produced on four farms on a total production area of 8,000 m² in 2017. The intensive use of the production area resulted in a harvested area of 79,000 m². Of this, about 1,370 tons of mushrooms were harvested, about 140 tons (nine percent) less than last year.

The Portobello continues to account for the largest share; 95 percent. Some 1,295 tons of this species were bred and marketed on 62,000 m², in three farms. The remaining 74 tons are divided into other types of mushrooms, such as shiitake, oyster mushrooms and the butterscotch mushroom. The majority of the harvest came from three mushroom producers, through organic production.

Table mushroom production was recorded in companies that had at least a production area of 1,000 m². In Germany, a total of 73,500 tons of edible mushrooms were harvested in 2017, including 72,200 tons of Portobellos. The Saxon share of the German edible mushroom production is 1.9 percent.
