Queuing for strawberries in the Netherlands

Rush hour around the Aardbeien (Strawberry) Drive-In at J & B in Uden, the Netherlands, last weekend shows it’s a successful formula. “There was even a build-up of traffic occasionally, although this was also partially caused by the Kom in de Kas (Visit our Greenhouses) event, for which we opened our greenhouses to the general public. Many people were drawn to that, and they naturally all passed our Drive-In,” says manager Welle van den Elzen.

The fruity fast food location was opened some weeks ago, and its reputation is growing. “Since the opening it’s been getting a bit more crowded on Mondays. The number of visitors on Monday can naturally not be compared to that of the weekends, but it’s getting better, which is caused by its growing reputation,” Welle says. “Since the opening, the weather’s been quite good, and when the sun shines, people want strawberries.”

Frontrunners are the punnets with strawberries and the chocolate-covered strawberries. “I didn’t expect the latter at all. We were already selling chocolate-covered strawberries in the vending machine, and those sales weren’t going as well as those of punnets of loose strawberries. At the Drive-In we sell about the same amount of both,” Welle concludes.
