Potato producers are threatening to go on an indefinite strike starting April 23 because the government has not complied with the agreements reached at the beginning of February.
On March 24, several potato producers met in Junin and agreed to give the Government one month to comply with the agreed measures, otherwise they will take protest measures.
"We want to be heard before going on strike. We are here (in Congress) to ask the new Minister of Agriculture (Gustavo Mostajo) to meet with us so that we can solve this problem," said Victor Vega Supo, the head of the National Agrarian Coordinator, during a press conference held by the National Convention of Peruvian Agriculture (Conveagro) in Congress.
"We have no money to buy seeds, to plant potatoes, or to buy fertilizers. We are undercapitalized and have no support. How are we going to guarantee people food if we have no money to produce it?"
90% of potato producers have run out of capital, he said. "We want the government to declare an emergency for the agricultural sector."
