Spain: Aid to transport for Canary bananas

Canary banana growers celebrated the introduction of a new subsidy that will make the transport of their production cheaper. According to the sector, this is the answer to a long standing demand. A total of 5 million Euro will be granted this year; an amount that does not fully satisfy the sector, as it is considered insufficient to face the competition from African and American bananas.

The Association of Canary Banana Producer Organizations (Asprocan) considers it only a first step and is already preparing amendments, aiming for the amount of aid to increase. According to data supplied by the organization itself, the annual cost of transport amounts to 35 million Euro. Its president, Domingo Martín, said that the subsidy "has not been requested on a whim. African bananas, for example, are imported into Europe without the payment of tariffs due to protection agreements with the EU, and the impact of that is clearly noticeable."

As for American bananas, their tariff barriers are lower than the extra cost that Canary bananas have to bear, which leads to tough competition in the peninsular market, the main destination for the Canary fruit.
