Chinese apple exports look hopeful

India eases apple import regulations

China is the world's largest apple producer, and nearby India is the world's third largest apple producer. The demand for apples in India, however, is great and can not be satisfied by domestic production alone.

India used to regulate apple imports through airports and harbors in Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbail, and Cochin, as well as the airport and landport of New Delhi, and several border checkpoints.

Media in India recently announced that the government has loosened the apple import regulations on March 27th, 2018. Apples can now enter India through any port. It is estimated that easing the regulations will not only take pressure off the apple market in India, and lower the price, but will also bring hope to apple exporters in many countries worldwide.

The head of India's Department of Foreign Trade points out in the official announcement that the restrictions on apple import have officially been removed. He estimates that the spread of this announcement will increase fruit supply to India's market and bring down prices. India currently imports apples from the USA, China, Chile, New Zealand, Italy, Iran, and Afghanistan. The overall import value of apples between April 2017 and January 2018 was 298 million USD.
