Joost van der Voort, QPI:

"Clash of Spanish and Dutch greenhouse vegetables causes difficult market"

The supply of Spanish and Dutch greenhouse vegetables are currently coinciding and according to Joost van der Voort of Quality Produce International (QPI) this is causing a difficult market situation. "A number of retailers are gradually moving over to Dutch produce but the demand is still too small to market the supply that we have in the Netherlands at an acceptable price level."

According to the commercial director there has been a slight expansion in the larger products within the Dutch cultivation such as vine tomatoes and peppers. "The supply of the Dutch production is now well on its way. We had enough light in recent weeks, so the productions are at a fair level for the time of the year. The Spanish supply differs per product, but there is also enough available."

"This means we are currently at a price level that isn't easy compared to previous years. Cucumbers are escaping mostly unscathed, and this is also the first product of which the supply from Spain is lessening. This price is decreasing now, but was at an acceptable level. The prices for tomatoes are still reasonably normal, but peppers and aubergines are far too cheap."
